Prince George of Kent

Prince George died in a plane crash in 1942, aged 39, in Caithness (the far north–east of Scotland). He was one of 15 people flying from Invergordon, Ross and Cromarty, to Iceland on "non–operational duties". The present Duke of Kent inherited the title as a result. He was only six years old at the time, and in August 2022 (as long as he survives) he will have held it for 80 years.

Forty years after Prince George's death his nephew, Prince William of Gloucester (eldest son of Prince George's elder brother), would also die in a plane crash.
